Modern Tips To Wear A Denim Jacket

You don’t have to be a service provider to get a lot of mileage from a truck driver. Or a cowboy. The denim jacket (as its founding fathers call it in US), like many workwear staples, has gone from an old reliability of menswear to a must-have for more dress codes than you can imagine.

“A denim jacket is a fantastic option for your versatility, especially at this time of year,”says Daniel Rhone, stylist and personal shopper for a team of first – class Premier League footballers-the emphasis is on the”shooters”. “I like the diaper as an intermediate between my choice of outerwear and an undercoat of a T-shirt or T-shirt. Especially if I underestimated the outside temperature.”

You don’t have to believe it on word though you should, because it’s a very cool guy even when he warms up. But to get the point home, here are 10 different ways to parden a denim jacket so you can keep driving down the road.

With Chinos

They actually wear jeans on their top half, and they know that double denim is a dangerous area. But the same goes for going out half naked. Enter chinos. They can be intelligent, with formalizing properties such as wrinkles, creases and tongue closure, but they can also be relaxed.

Their military history and their typically utilitarian cotton twill fabric still make them a reliable ally of denim; the original khaki-technically a color, not a style-is a classic chord. Add a white T-shirt (see below) and you are don Draper on weekends.

With A White T-shirt

This is another classic pairing inscribed in Americana. A sharp look, but without fuss, it’s not as easy as you might think.

Its success is largely based on finding the perfect white T-shirt that can be a Goldilocks ian quest: not too thin, not too loose; not too translucent, not too bulletproof; not too “gunny”, not too modest; not too like a dress, not too like a crop top; not so high on the neck that it’s a body-cum-garotte jersey, not so low that it’s a deep-U freestanding collarbone.

Whoever called the white T-shirt a base was wrong.

With jogging

A denim jacket does not exactly fit into the category of sportswear, unless you are a rodeo rider. But it offers a certain level of structure to compensate for the softness of your joggers, as well as more prosaic simply not another piece of jersey, so you don’t have to go to complete tracksuit or “Tesco tuxedo”.

This is not a hard and fast rule (there aren’t many of them in menswear), but they are probably best to avoid cowboy details on your denim jacket. Style historians do not register athleisure as a key trend in the Old West.

With Black Jeans

Double denim can be double good, even if you blatantly violate the “distinct shades” rule: see Martin Sheen in Badlands. It can also be very, very bad: see Justin Timberlake in your nightmares. But for a safe way to splice jeans, black and blue are hard to beat.

Other denim colors can do the same trick: gray on one side and even white, although it has its own pitfalls, not to mention impracticability. But like Wesley Snipes with a cheeky flutter on the Rugby World Cup, you always bet on black.

With Indigo jeans

A harder shade than black jeans, but still not as hard, unwashed indigo denim will be much less likely to bleed visually in a lighter and/or distressed denim jacket than lighter and/or distressed jeans, for reasons that should hopefully be visible when reading this sentence.

It’s not like a double, indistinct dark denim can never be made ghost: we seem to remember Ryan Gosling, looking pretty badass by car. But that said, he is Canadian, so may possess an advantage of country of origin.

With Shirt And Tie

Yes, you can mix business with work clothes. Make the partnership less beautiful by minimizing the clothes of the other elements to bring them more in line with your decidedly casual trucker: a buttoned oxford instead of a stiff poplin; a knitted tie instead of woven silk; a chino instead of tailor’s trousers (although they may also work-see below).

Note, even if your denim jacket isn’t too washed out, it’s still much more informal than any bespoke equivalent, so maybe not SFW at your workplace.

With hood

This combo is an alternative for any male blogger who is trying to appear vaguely urban. Don’t let this scare you away. A hoodie is a natural sparring partner for a denim jacket because they are both discreet, chuck-on weekend staples.

In this sense, do not overdo it. Keep the colors neutral and do not go to boxy with the cut of the hoodie. Avoid the cheeky logos of the latest streetwear drops and stick to a navy blue or mottled grey under a blue denim jacket.

With A tailor’s trousers

Similar to shirt and tie, it is useful if you can minimize the apparent discrepancy between your casual jacket and your elegant pants. This could be by dressing your jacket elegantly with unwashed dark denim as well as minimal frills such as contrast stitching or rivets.

Likewise, you can formally draw your pants by a notch with a more substantial nubby material that is closer to the denim on the spectrum. Or opt for a relaxed cut, short length or lapel.

With a roller pin

Wherever you can wear a shirt, you can rock a turtleneck sweater. Good, pretty good. But before you knit, think about what your denim jacket looks like, whether it’s flawless indigo or nail polish, and how it metaphorically connects to your sweater.

If the latter is too transparent and sheeny, there could be a dissonance with rough and hard denim; too chunky and your jacket may seem unsubstantial in comparison. (In general, the diapers should become thicker the further away from your body, and vice versa.)

With A Coat Or A Covering Colour

As with a tailored blazer, your denim jacket needs to be tailored if you want to wear it under a coat. You should pretty much be able to get two fingers down when you’re done, and it should be snug so that it doesn’t compete with the lapels of the coat.

By nature, even the smartest bespoke outerwear has a level of ruggedness, which is not as inappropriate as you might think. Also, don’t be afraid to side by side: camel, which usually distorts the formal, can be a very good combination. Bonus points if the seams of your jacket match the color.
