The Biggest Sneaker Trends Of 2021

As we cautiously enter the year 2020, there are big questions on everyone’s lips: are we being dragged into the Third World War? How can we prevent the entire planet from burning slag? And, much less importantly, what will be the next big thing in the world of sneakers?

Unfortunately, we are not really equipped to answer the first two; these questions go far beyond our expertise in menswear. However, if we look at the FashionBeans crystal ball for the first time this year, we can respond very well to the third.

While the early 2010s brought us a crisp white upper, minimalist silhouettes and the first touch of a subsequent 90s revival, 2020 will offer a striking contrast. From Haute Couture Collabs to the year 2000 reissue, these are the sneaker trends you should know over the next 12 months.

High Fashion Connectors
This time, ten years ago, you would have been laughed out of Paris by tall, thin, handsome people smoking tiny Menthol cigarettes for coming up with an Air Jordan X Christian Dior collaboration, and yet here we are. In 2019, the Sacai x Nike LDWaffle was arguably the biggest release of the year, and with the Air Dior Sneaker mentioned above, as well as another from Adidas and Prada, which will land later this year, the trend of Haute Couture collaborations will only increase.

Haute Couture Houses the connection to sneaker brands is symptomatic of a wider and global trend. This is one more step towards Streetwear, which is becoming the new Fashion standard-something that has been going on for several years. Nevertheless, this should be further proof of the presence of Streetwear in the fashion arena for everyone who is convinced that it was just a flash in the pan.

Great sneaker made up of different little sneakers and shoes

More Gore
Function Going Fashion has been one of the most important moments of men’s fashion of the year 2019. models were presented on the runways in technical clothing, bags were everywhere, and Gore-Tex surpassed fleece and corduroy as the warmest fabric. Dressing up for ice climbing at Karakoram has never been better.

But the appearance did not end on our ankles. AW19 brought an influx of Gore-Tex sneakers, some of which were shocking. Waterproof versions of Classic Styles such as The Adidas Stan Smith, Superstar and Nike Air Force One have all stolen shelves and triggered the old Sneakerhead winter dilemma, which should be Rock when the weather is rough. Expect to see more of the same as we settle in the new year.

Structured Trainers
We always suggest on the merits of adding a little texture to your wardrobe, but why stop at your feet? Structured trainers are already making progress in traditional menswear, but in 2020 they are on track to really explode. From corduroy plimsolls to furry suede runners, touch fabrics are taking over the sneaker world and we’re all for it.

It’s hard to determine when it all started, but if we were to put some money into it, we’d say it started around the launch of the Sean Wotherspoon Air Max 1/97 cord in 2018. Since then, coaches and coaches have had a steamy love affair that has led to some of the loveliest little baby sneakers we’ve ever seen. And with a new Wotherspoon collaboration set to fall in 2020, things will only heat up.

Power runner
Hot on the heels of the Trailrunners who have been peppering the front line of Fashion Week for several seasons, Performance running shoes are the latest functional shoes that have been picked up by the cooler than Thou fashion crowd.

Brands like Hoka One One and Nike and Undercover’s Gyakusou print have taken the Streetcred of their local racing club to unprecedented new heights, with colorful and powerful kicks that bite as hard as they bark. Granted, you probably won’t run a 150-mile Ultramarathon, but it’s good to know that the Option is there.

Mesh And Metallic
Much like infinite monkeys/infinite typewriters thought exercises, wait long enough and anything you can imagine will be fashionable. All Around Shades? Check. Sketcher? Check. Those very detailed metallic mesh and silver trainers that your high school teacher wore? In 2020, it would be another big fat check.

They are 00 style running shoes and, thanks to New Balance, Saucony and Asics, they are back for the new year. We like to think of it as Dad Shoe 2.0. The natural evolution of one of the biggest shoe trends of last year and something we will see much more in the next 12 months.

Zero Revival
Speaking of things in the style of the 1900s, in 2020 we are all ready to remind in a timely manner that the 20-year trend cycle watch continues to score points. The last decade has been very much marked by Nostalgia for the 90s, but as we enter the 20s, attention turns to the millennium.

We thought this day would never come, but with the revival of Baggy Jeans and Dangly Canvas belts last year, the signs were already in front of us. For further proof of what comes to our way of footwear, look at the recent resurgence of early ‘ 00s styles like Nike Shox and the aforementioned shiny shiny mesh sneakers. Do you already feel old?

The trend of sneakers we can see through
Here at FashionBeans we spend every day writing about men’s fashion, but this latest development of sneakers even surprised us. The first touch of transparent sneakers came back in 2018 courtesy of Virgil Abloh on the Converse All Star and Nike React Element 87; two semi-transparent kicks that revealed the wearer’s taste in the socks of the world.

They would have been forgiven at the time for dismissing it as a gimmick, but two years later we are here, faced with a plethora of fully transparent sneakers and each month more appear. Artist / model / Skateboarder Blondey McCoy’s new Adidas Superstar Collab was the last transparent shoe that shook tongues, but we’ve also seen (or looked at) transparent fila disruptors, Nike Air Force 1s and many more. For better or worse, this trend is only getting fat, and if you have to commit, put on a pair of socks for love for God.
